Vital research into gambling problems

A new study, which could help to develop prevention and treatment measures for problem gamblers, is being undertaken at Nottingham Trent University.

Dr Richard Wood and Professor Mark Griffiths, from the university's International Gaming Research Unit, have been commissioned to do the research by the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RiGT). The findings of the study - which can include any form of gambling - will be detailed in a report to the RiGT and could help prevent problem gambling in the UK.

As part of the research, the academics will be conducting in-depth interviews with problem gamblers, to try to gain a better understanding of how such problems begin, and how people cope with them.

The reported findings will be made anonymously using pseudonyms and interviews will be taking place until May.

Dr Wood said: "This is a vital piece of research, one which is really trying to establish what motivates the problem gambler to undertake the activities he or she does.  The results will hopefully lead to more measures being put in place to support these people in overcoming their addictions."

Notes for editors: The RiGT is an independent body set up in response to proposals for major changes to the legal framework for gambling, which the Government hopes to implement by next year. It is being provided with £3m a year by the gambling industry.

Any past or present problem gambler wanting to take part in the study should contact Dr Wood on Richard.wood@ntu.ac.uk
