Pakistan official visits law school
A senior Pakistan government official has visited Nottingham Trent University’s Law School to learn more about its work in the field of corruption. Lt General Munir Hafiez, who is leading the fight on high-level corruption in his home country, spent a day meeting with senior university staff and academics.
His visit gave the Law School the chance to showcase its expertise, particularly the work done for the Crown Prosecution Service in the areas of trans-national crime and asset recovery. Lt Gen Hafiez was also told about the Law School’s advocacy programmes and the LLM Corporate Law Programme.
Lt Gen Hafiez is the Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Pakistan. The bureau is responsible for detection, investigation, prosecution, and disposal of cases involving corruption, misuse and abuse of power, and misappropriation or property and kickbacks. He is also Chairman of the Implementation Committee of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy after being appointed directly by President Pervez Musharraf to lead the nation’s fight against the problem.
During his visit, Lt Gen Hafiez met with Nottingham Trent University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Gorman, Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Jones, Professor Michael Gunn and Ms Fiona Cunningham of Nottingham Law School and Andy Nicol from the university’s International Development Office.
Andy Nicol said: “The visit was a resounding success and plans are even underway for the Law School to provide the NAB with its expertise and training in the form of short-course provision. The NAB is responsible for eradicating corruption in Pakistan and has recovered nearly £2bn in the last three years, but increasingly sophisticated fraud means its 2,000 employees constantly need professional training and development.”
He added: “The university’s expertise in flexible short-course provision through the Nottingham Law School means we can assist the government with training in key areas such as money laundering.”
