Academic partnerships continue to flourish

The founder and past president of Kolej Linton in Malaysia will receive an honorary degree when Nottingham Trent University holds its 12th annual awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on August 14. Professor Lim Keng Bong will join around 200 Malaysian students who will be receiving their PhDs, honours degrees and diplomas.

The event at the Shangri-La Hotel represents a milestone in the university’s longstanding collaborations with KBU International College and Kolej Linton.

Since the partnerships with the Malaysian colleges were forged, thousands of Malaysian students have used their Nottingham Trent University qualifications as a springboard for exciting and rewarding careers. These include engineering, computing, graphic design, interior architecture and design and quantity surveying.

Professor Lim will be presented with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University to reflect his achievements in supporting Nottingham Trent University in Malaysia as well as promoting its interests in China. In addition to an eminent career in industry, he has played a pivotal role in the Malaysian education sector for more than 20-years.

His attainments have been recognised in countless ways – including two Medals of Honour, awarded by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak, to recognise his acts of philanthropy and his contributions to the state and society, particularly in the field of educational development.

An alumni reception will take place at the hotel the evening before the ceremony and will be hosted by the Nottingham Trent University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Gorman. The event is intended to give former students an opportunity to meet old friends as well as other university alumni now living in Malaysia.

Most of the graduates have completed their Nottingham Trent University degree in their own country. Others, however, chose to experience the rewards of studying overseas and took the final year of their courses in Nottingham.

This year’s roll call of honour includes a number of first class honours, a PhD for Leong Ping Tan and an MSc with Commendation in Electrical and Electronic Engineering for Chin Peen Ong.

Professor Gorman, who will present the awards, said: “Our Malaysian partnerships have produced many confident and ambitious graduates who have gone on to boost their country’s economic prosperity and strengthen its skills base. Judging from their academic achievements, I have no doubt that our class of 2005 will prove to be just as influential.”

He added: “Our university’s mission is all about providing education which shapes lives and society – and our Malaysian alliances are an excellent example of how we are succeeding in that mission.”
