Four in a row for student journalists

Nottingham Trent University is celebrating after winning the online category in a national journalism competition for the fourth year running. Since trade publication Press Gazette launched its Student Journalism Awards in 2001, students from the University have won the Online Journalism section every year.

MA Journalism student Rebecca Appleton’s features on shopping in New York and violence in the classroom earned her first place in the category, beating off competition from dozens of other hopefuls. Rebecca, who is now working as assistant editor for marbellas.com, an online magazine based in Marbella, Spain, received a silver framed certificate and £500 during the awards ceremony at The Brewery in London.

She said: “I was surprised to win, but very proud. It is an amazing feeling to have my work recognised in this way and it has inspired me to continue to make the most of the many possibilities and opportunities online journalism provides. It’s a great reflection on the quality of teaching provided at the University as we have dominated this category every time.”

Nottingham Trent University performed well in other categories too, with a further seven students making the shortlist in the Student Interviewer of the Year, Radio Journalist of the Year and Television Journalist of the Year sections.

Richard Ventre, Rebecca’s tutor and senior lecturer in broadcasting and journalism, said: “Rebecca has been a first-class student who thoroughly deserves this recognition. I’m delighted for her, as are other members of staff at the University’s Centre for Broadcasting & Journalism who have worked with her over the last year."

He added: “We’ve had a number of firsts in other categories over the years, but the fact that Nottingham Trent University has won this particular award every year is remarkable.”

The competition was judged by a panel which included Press Gazette editor Ian Reeves, Take a Break editor John Dale and Times photographer Richard Cannon.

Ian Reeves said: “Rebecca Appleton and the previous winners of the competition’s online category have all shared an understanding of the fact that the web offers great scope for examining issues and explaining stories using compelling combinations of words, pictures, audio and video.”
