Graduates build on success with Nottingham Trent University
Nottingham Trent University alumni have been selected to help ensure the smooth running of a major construction programme for the University’s Bonington building. Construction service provider Bluestone has been awarded a contract to carry out the extension and refurbishment works, due to be completed by February 2006.
As part of the build, the company has enlisted the skills of recent graduates Nick Hilton, who will project manage the scheme, and Gustave Kedzior who will be quantity surveyor. They will be assisted by another Nottingham Trent University alumnus, assistant quantity surveyor, Tom Anderson and year-out student Lee Haynes.
The project will comprise the refurbishment of existing facilities on a split-level site and new build works across five areas of Bonington, which is home to the University’s School of Art and Design.
Additional teaching accommodation will be provided with a new two-storey extension above part of the existing building, with a steel frame threaded through the foundations to strengthen the new structure. The major works will also include two new single-storey levels and a glazed atrium and exhibition area to maximise natural light to teaching and display areas, retail units and cafeterias.
Project Manager Nick Hilton said: “It’s a great privilege to have been chosen to manage this exciting and innovative project. My time at Nottingham Trent University has prepared me well for the task and I’m really looking forward to seeing it through.”
With the site bounded by three roads and the adjacent Students’ Union building, Bluestone will follow a complex construction programme, including piling within existing buildings; a challenge which John Homer, regional managing director, says the company is well prepared for.
He said: “We have undertaken a number of projects in the education sector in which we have had to deal with tricky city centre locations and the complications of working in a live environment during term time. As with all of our schemes we will liaise closely with the university to ensure that the safety and well-being of students and staff remains out highest priority.”
