Like father, like son - success is a family affair

Like father, like son … success has been a family affair for Bob and Scott Dunn who both receive their Master of Business Administration (MBA) qualifications from Nottingham Trent University on Saturday (26). The pair will join about 1,000 other students for the ceremony at the Royal Concert Hall, who have achieved a wide range of qualifications.

Bob and Scott studied part-time at Nottingham Business School, starting with a BA (Hons) in 1998 and then continuing to the MBA. Bob is the Chief Executive of Nottingham-based coach operator Dunn-Line plc, while Scott is Operations Director for the firm.

It was Scott who encouraged his father to embark on the first degree and, after graduating in 2002, they viewed the MBA as a natural progression. While they did not work together on assignments, the pair found it valuable to read each other’s work afterwards, and to give each other moral support and encouragement.

And there was no hint of father-son rivalry. “I get more reward from seeing Scott do well and developing his own skills than doing well myself,” said Bob.

He added: “I enjoy being part of Nottingham Business School and it has been even better learning alongside a member of my family. Together we have been able to use the knowledge we have gained from our studies to benefit the business. ”

Principal Lecturer, Dr Carole Tansley, said: “Bob and Scott each brought a wealth of business knowledge to the management learning experience that characterises the Nottingham Business School MBA. The other students enjoyed learning from them about the challenges of running a successful family business in a period of high growth. They are living proof that families can successfully learn together as well as work together.”
