Top accolades for University volunteers

Once again volunteers from Nottingham Trent University excelled at the Higher Education Active Community Fund (HEACF) Student Volunteering Awards. For the second-year running the University scooped three prizes – more than any other university – at the Awards ceremony which celebrates the achievements of student and staff volunteers across the country.

The University was presented with two Student Award Winner prizes as well as an Outstanding Project Award by the Higher Education Funding Council for England ’s Chief Executive, Sir Howard Newby. More than 200 guests attended the high-profile ceremony at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, hosted by TV presenter Philippa Forrester.

Charlotte Balf, Jennifer Fox, Kelly Horrobin, Caroline Ireland, Victoria Oakley and Sylvie Plent won a student award for the Keys to Success scheme. Keys to Success was a group entry, representing valuable volunteering work in local primary schools. The volunteers provided classroom assistance and helped raise pupils’ aspiration through being role models.

James Wong was the other Student Award Winner for his work at The Beckhampton Centre Pupil Referral Unit in Nottingham. James, an international student, volunteered to help a group of pregnant teenagers who were unable to attend mainstream education by running a series of arts and crafts workshops.

The Coach4Sport project, coordinated by Stuart Smith, won the Outstanding Project Award. This is a successful multi-skills learning project involving a number of local partners. It provides city primary schools with high-quality extra-curricular sports provision and enables students to develop their CV through high-quality qualifications, training and practical experience.

Nottingham Trent University ’s Volunteering Project Co-ordinator, Andy Coppins, said: “Winning three awards again is a great achievement, and represents the commitment the volunteers have to working with the local community.

He added: “It’s great to see this commitment recognised on a national level, through these awards, and so well done to all our volunteers involved. The volunteering project at Nottingham Trent University is continually growing and so this is a great way of celebrating the volunteering in which we are involved.”
