Prestigious award win for pro bono volunteers

Nottingham Law School at Nottingham Trent University has won the Pro Bono Award 2006 from the Nottinghamshire Law Society.

The award was presented by Michael Napier CBE, the Attorney General's Pro Bono Envoy and the Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer, at an event attended by 500 members of the law profession - including members of the judiciary, senior members of the Bar and presidents from other law societies.

Students from the Nottingham Law School have been involved in around 100 pro bono opportunities in this academic year alone - the scheme involves them undertaking voluntary work for a wide range of local organisations including refugee groups, mental health and family welfare groups and the Nottingham Youth Offending Team.

Senior Lecturer Nick Johnson, who coordinates the Pro Bono work at Nottingham Law School, said: "It's great that all the hard work, particularly for the students who are so closely involved in the running of this project, has been recognised by our peers.  It will be an excellent springboard to help us to further develop new pro bono initiatives for the coming year."

Professor Michael Gunn, Dean of the Nottingham Law School said: "I am thrilled with this award. My colleagues have a very long standing in pro bono activity. This award is the icing on the cake for their efforts. I am delighted they have received this public recognition, which they so thoroughly deserve."
