Academic to highlight energy concerns - 'Sustainable Energy UK: Which way?' Bonington Lecture Theatre, Nottingham Trent University
The need for a sustainable energy-based economy is to be highlighted during an inaugural lecture given by Nottingham Trent University academic, Dr Jo Darkwa. The event, Sustainable Energy UK: Which way? will be held in the University’s Bonington Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 3 May.
Dr Darkwa, a sustainable energy expert from the University’s School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, will give an overview of the UK’s energy resources and usage over the last 30 years.
He will identify the major energy-consuming activities within the building and transport sectors and argue that the economic survival of any country depends on its ability to produce and manage sufficient supplies of reliable, low-cost, safe sources of energy.
Dr Darkwa said: “With the energy usage levels rising by about 2% each year, coupled with the fact that the UK is likely to import about three quarters of its primary energy needs from relatively unstable regions of the world by the year 2020, the future of our energy situation could be considered unsustainable.”
He added: “In order to pursue a sustainable energy-based economy, this lecture strongly argues for integrated, technological and management approaches supported by bold political decisions.”
