Top fashion award for student

Stunning designs evoking images of ancient Egypt have earned a Nottingham Trent University student first prize in a prestigious national fashion competition. Terri Cohen has won the Graduate Competition, held by the educational fashion charity Fashion Awareness Direct (FAD).

The third-year fashion student - from the University's School of Art and Design - astounded the judges with her beautiful, sophisticated and refined outfits to gain a unanimous first place vote and win the £2,000 prize money and a work placement with Harrods. Hand-dyed silk, hand-stitched strips and individual printed cotton all formed part of her designs.

When asked how she felt about seeing her designs on the catwalk and winning first prize, Terri said; “It felt amazing. I had worked extremely hard on this brief and I was very happy that people appreciated what I had created.”

Using the craftsmanship, symbolism and motifs of Egypt as inspiration, entrants were required to create two outfits. A ‘charm’ outfit reflecting and enhancing the designer’s personality and a ‘Geometric’ outfit making use of triangular and architecturally influenced patterns.

The 20 finalists’ outfits were showcased on the catwalk and through an exhibition attended and judged by industry representatives, including Hilary Alexander, Fashion Editor of the Daily Telegraph.

Her tutor, Gilly Staples, said: “Terri’s a fantastically talented, motivated and hard working individual. She’s always pushing herself to achieve the best and we’re all really proud of her.”

FAD’s Director, Maria Alvarez de Toledo, said: “This year’s entries were exceptionally strong and the competition has provided a platform to showcase new talent – something greatly appreciated by students, teachers and the industry alike.”
