The future's bright for designers
Students from Nottingham Trent University have shown they have a bright future ahead of them by winning at a prestigious lighting design competition. The University had three prize winners at the Lighting Association’s Student Lighting Design Awards final.
Student Chris Rea won the Philips Lighting Award for the best use of modern light source with his 'Array' ceiling light. The circular design has numerous lights and sails along its edge, causing it to gently rotate and cast shadows on the wall. Chris will be rewarded with an all-expenses paid trip to the Philips Lighting headquarters in Eindhoven, Holland.
David Wiltshire and Philip Ashley share the prize for best 'flatwork' presentation boards which illustrate their designs. Their Pangea floor light and Mimic Lighting table lamp displays mean they will share a cash prize.
The students, from the BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design course at Nottingham Trent University, beat off competition from almost 500 entrants. The event – now in its 23rd year – allows students to gain valuable knowledge about the lighting industry, while using their creative skills to develop new lighting products.
Senior Lecturer in Product Design, Steve Rutherford, said: “Our continuing success in this event is a tribute to our great students and technical staff, for designing wonderful objects and proving that they work.”
