Engineering success for Lyndsey
A national award which recognises the achievements of top engineering undergraduates has been won by a Nottingham Trent University student. Lyndsey McAndrew, 23, who has just completed a BSc Engineering (Mechanical) degree, has received the annual Baroness Platt of Writtle Award for Young Incorporated Engineers.
The award – run by The Worshipful Company of Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology – is awarded to final-year students on courses which lead to Incorporated Engineer status (IEng).
To win, Lyndsey had to undergo a series of interviews in front of a panel of judges, and show innovation and excellence during her degree. She receives £1,000, an engraved medal and a certificate.
The judges described her as a focused young engineer, already showing signs of significant leadership and achievement, with a real enthusiasm and passion for the industry. Particular reference was made to a successful spell at Toyota cars, where Lyndsey did her final-year work placement.
Tutor Alan Crisp, a principal lecturer in product design, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by Lyndsey and we are delighted with her success. As a result of this award she has been nominated and will be appointed as an ambassador of Women into Science and Engineering (WISE).”
The Engineers’ Company said: “We are pleased that one of our most prestigious awards, named after our Court Assistant, Baroness Platt of Writtle, has been won by such a worthy candidate as Lyndsey. We wish her good luck in her future engineering career.”
