Photographer captures region's beauty
A Nottingham academic has just returned home after being invited as the only British photographer to document one the most fascinating places on the planet. Hugh Hamilton, a photography lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, was invited to China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region by the Chinese Photographers Association (CPA).
Hugh covered more than 3,000km during his visit, taking 2,200 photographs along the way. The images will now be used by the Chinese to attract tourists to the region, which lies to the north west of Tibet and makes up one sixth of China’s total area.
The area boasts an array of stunning landscapes and countless scenic wonders including the magnificent Tianshan Mountain and Taklimakan Desert. Hugh’s route took him along the southern section of the ancient Silk Road from Kashi, through historic oasis towns and then across the desert to the region’s capital, Urumqi.
He was invited by one of his former Chinese MA Photograph students, Gang Zhao, who is a member of the CPA.
Hugh said: “Throughout the hard trip, from the smallest and remotest village, to the largest city, our party was received with incredible kindness and generosity. It was an amazing experience to see a part of the world that few westerners have access to.”
