Markets' Welcome Week welcome to students
Everything from fresh food and jewellery to greeting cards and clothing will be available to students and staff as part of Nottingham Trent University’s annual Welcome Week celebrations. The University and Nottingham City Council have teamed up for a series of markets at the City and Clifton campuses during the event.
On Tuesday 3 October, traders will visit the Clifton campus as part of Clifton Market’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Nottingham City Council has been working with traders and the University to encourage students to get involved with the community and take full advantage of amenities in the Clifton area.
The market, from 9 am to 2 pm, will include a wide-range of affordable goods and services including fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy products, rugs and paperback books. This is just a sample of the goods available at Clifton Market, which takes place every Friday and Saturday on Southchurch Drive.
Two markets designed to promote healthy eating will be held on Dryden Street at the City campus on Wednesday 4 and 11 October. Fruit and vegetables, organic pies and Fairtrade produce such as chocolate, tea and coffee, dried fruits and juices, will be available. Both markets will run from 9 am to 2 pm. These markets will also be open to the public.
The markets are being run as part of Nottingham Trent University’s Welcome Week which involves more than 350 activities across its city, Clifton and Brackenhurst campuses. It is aimed at giving students the chance to discover the best of what the University and Nottingham have to offer.
Students have plenty of opportunities to explore the city with trips to the Theatre Royal, Nottingham Playhouse, guided tours of the city centre, a night at the National Ice Centre and a trip to Goose Fair.
There will be on-campus events such as films, foreign language taster sessions, sports classes, nights out in the students’ union and a range of themed fairs promoting important issues such as healthy living and volunteering. The week begins with an official welcome to all new students by the university Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Gorman.
Head of Customer Services at Nottingham Trent University, Michael Lees, said: “We are delighted to welcome the markets to Nottingham Trent University. We want to continue to build a strong relationship with the local community and this is a great event. We very much hope to continue to hosts local markets throughout the year.”
Roy Abbott, of Nottingham City Council, said: “This is a great opportunity to promote the diverse range of goods available on Nottingham’s markets and demonstrate that we are proud to continue serving the student community.”
