Newspaper journalism course claims top spot

A journalism qualification at Nottingham Trent University has received a massive boost after topping an exam pass league table. The MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism came out best in this year’s National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) table for preliminary exam results.

The University topped the table across all seven subjects, including shorthand at 100 words per minute. The league tables provide a benchmarking tool for the universities, colleges and commercial providers which run NCTJ-accredited courses. They are also used to assist with NCTJ accreditation and to monitor standards.

The Director of the University’s Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism, Robin Staniforth, said: “We are thrilled by our results this year as everyone has worked so hard. I have a very committed team of journalism staff, and we set very high standards for ourselves as we do when recruiting students with the talent and potential to be successful journalists.”

He added: “We also benefit from being in an excellent news area. Nottingham is a vibrant and exciting city, an ideal centre for students to study with lots of newspapers and other media opportunities to apply their skills.”
