Celebrating students' sterling volunteer work
Woodland conservation work, renovating a counselling room at a women’s centre, and dancing with elderly people at a tea dance – these are just some of the activities being undertaken by Nottingham Trent University students as part of this year’s national Student Volunteering Week.
The event, from 26 February to 4 March, aims to raise awareness of student volunteering and celebrate the brilliant work that student volunteers do in their community. Projects have been organised by Nottingham Trent University’s student volunteering group, Junction, a joint initiative between the University and students’ union.
They include a project at Bestwood Country Park, with conservation of a woodland area, planting work and general clean-up. Volunteers will also take part in a tea-dance with elderly people at The Radford Care Group, help with the buffet, and even provide the music for the event.
Students will spend two days mural-painting and decorating at the Nottingham Women’s Centre, as part of work to renovate a counselling room. They will also team up with University of Nottingham students for a variety of environmental projects at Stonebridge City Farm.
The Volunteering Projects Coordinator at Nottingham Trent University, Andy Coppins, said: “There are some fantastic projects this year and we can’t wait to get started. More and more students are taking part in volunteering opportunities, allowing them to use and develop their skills and enthusiasm in a way that benefits the local community.”
He added: “Throughout last year more than 550 Nottingham Trent University students volunteered on a variety of projects and their efforts totalled more than 12,000 hours within the local community. Our volunteers also won two prizes, including an Exceptional Winner, in the latest Higher Education Active Community Fund Volunteering Awards, which celebrate the achievements of student and staff volunteers across the country.”
