Young consumers aim for prestigious title: Which school will walk away with the prize for the region's top young consumers of the year?
Teenagers from across the East Midlands will put their consumer knowledge to the test when they take part in the first ever regional final of the Young Consumers of the Year Competition, held at the Brackenhurst campus of Nottingham Trent University in Southwell on 15 March 2007.
Four schools will go head to head in the regional final, The King's School and Monks Dyke Technology College from Lincolnshire and Heanor Gate Science College and Netherthorpe Science College from Derbyshire. The teams of four, aged between 14 and 18 years old, compete in a knockout quiz which tests them on a range of consumer issues, including consumer rights and responsibilities, money and finance, food and health, and safety and the environment.
Organised by local Trading Standards services, the competition is separated into 3 stages, with each team winning their local final to earn a place at the regional competition. The regional winners will go on to represent the East Midlands in a fiercely fought national final, which this year will be held at the International Conference Centre in Manchester in June.
Robert Taylour, Chair of Trading Standards East Midlands said: “Young Consumers of the Year is a popular competition which helps young people to be aware of their rights as consumers and provides them with skills for life. Its great to be able to hold the first East Midlands final and we wish all the teams the very best of luck.”
Quizmaster for the competition, Consumer Direct East Midlands Manager Sara Barry added: “I’m delighted to be involved in what promises to be an exciting final and an event that helps to empower the consumers of the future.”
All competitors will receive a medal, with each member of the winning team taking home £50 worth of vouchers as well as holding the Trading Standards East Midlands trophy for the year.
Young Consumers of the Year involves hundreds of schools in the country, that rise to the challenge to become the nation's top young consumers of 2007, with a prize of £1,000 for the winning school together with the coveted Young Consumer of the Year trophy.
Last year a Lincolnshire school reached the national finals – The King’s School, Grantham came fourth in the competition overall.
