Footballers on target in vital varsity ties
Nottingham Trent University footballers pulled off a memorable double in the Charity Varsity Series on Monday night, winning both the men’s and women’s fixtures against the University of Nottingham. Almost 4,000 people watched the games at Notts County’s Meadow Lane, as the men and women eased to 3-0 and 2-0 victories respectively.
The prestigious and high-profile series, which pits the two universities against each other across a variety of sporting events, is organised to celebrate sporting excellence and community relations. Nottingham Trent University, which has also won this year’s ice-hockey encounter, has held the Varsity Series Trophy for the last two years.
Proceeds from the series are going to Nottingham-based charity CP (Cerebral Palsy) Sport, the sports organisation for people with cerebral palsy, which provides sporting opportunities to individuals at all levels.
Goals in the women’s football came from Chantelle Lewis and Nicole Ledgister while it was two goals from Justin Heath and one from Jordan Smith that secured victory for the men.
Nottingham Trent University’s Director of Sports and Lifestyle, James Hayter, said:
“All the teams have displayed great skill and a strong desire to win in these highly competitive matches. I'm really pleased that the games have been played with superb spirit and sporting behaviour.”
