UK first as university teams up with Severn Trent Water
The first bespoke supply chain management programme run by a higher education institution for the utility sector has been launched at Nottingham Trent University. The university’s Nottingham Business School has linked up with Severn Trent Water to offer a two-year programme, leading to a Diploma in Management Studies (Supply Chain).
The course aims to establish a business learning environment to address the supply chain issues and management development needs of Severn Trent and its suppliers, contractors and consultants.
The Diploma in Management Studies is a postgraduate programme, which is a nationally recognised award for managers, including those with a first degree and/or relevant work experience. It also takes delegates two thirds of the way towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
The programme requires delegates to complete 14 modules over two stages, which are delivered in day-blocks. Assessment is through written work-based reports, research and presentations.
Modules in the stage one timetable include environment of the manager; marketing practices and principles; managing operations and projects; managing finance; managing information; and context and practice of managing people. The timetable runs from April 2007 to February 2008.
Stage two modules include strategy and the supply chain; managing change; financial resources and human resource management. Two other modules include a research project on issues identified within the supply chain and the opportunity to undertake consultancy within the supply chain group of companies.
Benefits will include better understanding within the supply chain strategies, business plans and operations; and improved relationships between people at different levels within member organisations. Delegates will be able to identify and solve business improvement areas more efficiently and create a unique knowledge bank of research information for member companies to access and utilise.
Dr Mike Brown, Director of Postgraduate Corporate Programmes at Nottingham Trent University, said: “This innovative course is the result of a great deal of planning between the university and the senior management team at Severn Trent Water. We hope it will enable greater discussion, debate and knowledge that will be to the benefit of all involved.”
Tony Wray, the Managing Director of Severn Trent Water, said: “Severn Trent Water is very pleased to be involved in such an important initiative. We are committed to continued improvement in our business and this exciting programme provides a unique opportunity for members of our supply chain to address issues and learn together in a knowledge-sharing collaborative environment.”
