Pupils to compete in fun-filled day of science
Pupils from schools across the Midlands will compete in an action-packed day of chemistry experiments at Nottingham Trent University on Wednesday 16 May. The University’s Centre for Effective Learning in Science (CELS) is hosting the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry, which is aimed at promoting chemistry to young people.
In the morning the 11-13 year-olds will embark on a hands-on practical activity, A Salty Tale, in which they will need to use their analytical chemistry skills. They will then take part in University Challenge, a task set by university experts where pupils will be given a range of experiments to perform on slime.
This will be followed by a lecture demonstrating ‘pops and bangs’, and a prize-giving ceremony where the winning teams will receive certificates and cash for their schools.
CELS Outreach Coordinator, Dr Georgina Westbrook, said: “The Salter’s Festival is an excellent way of bringing young talented scientists together to celebrate chemistry in a fun and exciting way. By hosting the competition, CELS hopes to offer this opportunity to more schools and students in the region.”
