Journalism students make top award shortlists

Five Nottingham Trent University students have been shortlisted for prizes in this year’s Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards. Three are in the running for Student Television Journalist of the Year, while two are up for Student Radio Journalist of the year. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Reuters’ London headquarters on Friday (6 July).

The awards, now in their sixth year, aim to celebrate the work of the next generation of journalism stars and are open to student journalists across the country. The shortlisted television journalists from Nottingham Trent University are Sonia De Matteis, William Nunan and Joanne Prior, and the shortlisted radio journalists are Corazon Garcia and Matthew Price.

The shortlists have been selected by working journalists in each particular field, and the winners, who will receive cash prizes, will be chosen by an expert panel of judges. These include Times reporter Lucy Bannerman, News of the World feature writer Gemma Calvert, Loaded editor Martin Daubney and The Sun’s deputy Editor Fergus Shanahan.

For the radio journalist category, entrants needed to demonstrate skills in presenting, producing and reporting. They submitted news bulletins, or segments of documentaries and current affairs programmes. The television journalists were judged on the same criteria but entrants also needed to show evidence of script writing and editing.

The director of Nottingham Trent University’s Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism, Robin Staniforth, said: “To have five of our students shortlisted for such prestigious awards is a truly fantastic achievement and we wish them all well for Friday when the winners are announced.”
