Students take top honours in textile competition

Hannah BullenNottingham Trent University textile design students have been awarded one of the oldest and most prestigious titles of its kind in the UK, the Designers Guild Plaque, from the Bradford Textile Society. In addition to the top prize students were awarded 17 awards and commendations in total for their innovative design work in the Society’s annual design competition – the largest number for any one institution.

Divided into six sections, the Bradford Textile Society Awards cover a wide number of categories for textile design. Hannah Bullen won first place and £400 for her work in the ‘fabric designed for Interior Textiles’ category which saw her weave with a very unconventional material – copper. Joanna Elliott won the ‘Crossing the Boundaries’ award – and £400 - with an innovative textile design utilising a combination of textile processes. Hannah and Joanna, both graduates, will be exhibiting their work at New Designers – the foremost showcase event for up and coming graduate designers.

Other students receiving prizes and commendations included Naomi Barber, Priyanka Lala, Katie Hounsfield, Georgina Bavalia, Jessica Tank, Victoria Teale, Carina Hazelgrave, Elizabeth Prestt, Lucinda Littler, Katie Long and Katie Taylor.

This is the sixth year that Nottingham Trent University has entered the competition which traditionally attracts entries from some of the biggest Art and Design Schools in the UK.

Jane Bartholomew, Senior Lecturer in Textile Design at Nottingham Trent University, said: “To be recognised for the quality of our work in this way is a fantastic achievement.

“We were competing against the best in the country, some at MA level, so the standard was incredibly high. To win what we did and to take away the overall title means a great deal - the students should be justifiably proud in what they have produced.”
