Nottingham in focus for book on digital TV news revolution

Nottingham Trent University and the BBC TV’s Nottingham news centre have taken a central role in a new book, which explores the biggest shake up in television news since the computer replaced the old-fashioned typewriter.

The book, Into The Newsroom, by Nottingham Trent University senior lecturer Dr Emma Hemmingway, is the result of three years detailed research into how news is reported, gathered and produced in the rapidly changing digital world.

It includes a forward by one of the first journalists on the scene at the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and goes on to look at the way in which the processes and perception of television news reporting have changed beyond recognition since those pioneering days.

It challenges orthodox readings of television news production – which have been revolutionised by the advances in digital technology.

The book is the result of a unique partnership between Nottingham Trent University's Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism and the BBC News Centre, where much of the research was carried out.

Dr Hemmingway is a former BBC television producer based in Nottingham.

She says: “It was my aim to try to bring my own practical experience to the study of news.”

Into The Newsroom gives, for the first time, closely-observed, relevant and up-to-the-minute information on the researching, filming and transmission of news and the way it has been revolutionised in the digital age.

The book, aims to be of interest to both academic students of journalism and trainees journalists.
