Fashion supremo honoured by Nottingham Trent University

Fashion Director of The Daily Telegraph, Hilary Alexander, is to receive an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University in recognition of her outstanding support for students, graduates and aspiring new designers.

The award of the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Design reflects her international distinction not only in the fashion and journalism arena but also in the wider world of arts and learning.

Hilary has a particularly high profile among fashion students because of the expert advice and invaluable encouragement she gives to up-and-coming designers. She plays a pivotal role during Graduate Fashion Week and other major competitions where she acts as a judge.

Twice winner of the British Fashion Journalist of the Year title, New Zealand-born Hilary joined The Daily Telegraph in 1985 and has extensive broadcasting experience, including three years on BBC2’s Style Challenge and regular appearances on shows such as GMTV, Lorraine Kelly and BBC Breakfast.

She was the featured stylist in the Living TV series Britain’s Next Top Model and has also appeared in various documentaries for BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4 as well as national channels in Germany, France, Spain, Russia and China.

Respected as a leading authority on style issues, she is regularly interviewed for key cable TV channels such as Fashion File, Fashion TV and Video Fashion as well as for major radio stations. She is also well-known as the regular stylist and presenter for the designer catwalk shows at the annual Clothes Show Live event in Birmingham.

The award will be presented during a ceremony at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall on 24 November.

Ann Priest, Dean of Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, said: "Hilary is recognised internationally for the intelligent quality of her work and her ability to demonstrate passion, wit and exuberance in her support for British fashion and young designers and students in particular.

"However, whilst recognising these special qualities, it is her ability to acknowledge in her work the social, cultural and economic importance of fashion and its related industries that ensures her valuable contribution to British fashion and fashion journalism."
