University strikers named in elite football squad
Two of Nottingham Trent University’s finest football stars, Alex Rodman and Andy Rushbury, have been selected as Centre Forwards in this year’s British University Sports Association (BUSA) English Universities squad. They will now have the opportunity to take part in the World University Games in Belgrade in July 2009.
BUSA coaching staff have worked tirelessly through a four month programme to find players of the calibre needed to represent their country. Finally, at a two day training camp held this month, 36 talented Footballers were whittled down to 28, presenting the gifted few with the opportunity to play at the highest level of university football.
Business Studies student and Gainsborough Trinity player Alex, 20 said: “I can’t wait to pull on an England shirt. Being given the chance to represent your country at any level is a real honour.”
Andy, 24, Belper Town FC player and Sports Science with IT student, added: “It means a lot to be picked and we'll both be doing our best to do Nottingham Trent University proud.”
The new squad will now take part in a two year football programme which aims to promote team spirit, foster lasting relationships with non league clubs and their managers, and to play an important part in player development. The culmination of the programme will be the opportunity to play in the World University Games next year.
Nottingham Trent University Director of Sport, James Hayter, said: “We’re thrilled to be making a contribution to the national squad through Alex and Andy. Both are excellent players and I’m pleased their talents have been recognised in this way. It’s an additional honour with Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough being the only two East Midlands universities to have had players selected for the squad.”
Alex and Andy will be appearing for Nottingham Trent University at Meadow Lane on the 3rd March, when they play University of Nottingham in the annual Varsity Sports Series clash.
