Student volunteers to stage action-packed fun day

Dance workshops, African drumming, puppet making and pizza decorating are just a few of the activities youngsters can look forward to thanks to a new project at Nottingham Trent University. A team of dedicated student volunteers have organised an action-packed fun day at the Vine Community Centre in Hyson Green this Friday to coincide with half-term.

The group has teamed up with staff and volunteers from the Vine Community Centre and Nottingham City Council's Play Team for the day-long event, which also includes story writing and book binding, jewellery making, card making and film screenings.

The event has been made possible via Junction49.co.uk, a new website launched last year at Nottingham Trent University which empowers young people to take action in their communities based on what is important to them.

Catie Smith, Junction49 Volunteer Support Worker from Nottingham Trent Students’ Union, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for children aged five to 13 to get involved with some hands-on fun activities. We know how boredom can sometimes set in during the school holidays but the volunteers have worked really hard to organise an event to cater for as many youngsters as possible.”

Jayne Pigford, Family Development Worker at the Vine Community Centre, said: “This follows on from a really successful fun-day organised by the Vine Community Centre with its St Stephen’s Church and parent volunteers earlier this week. It promises to be a fantastic day and we’re really looking forward to being able to bring more fun to the children’s half-term break.”

Nottingham Trent University and the students’ union have an excellent reputation for their award-winning volunteering efforts, supporting a wide range of projects across the city. From February 25 students will be embarking on this year’s national Student Volunteering Week which aims to raise awareness to student volunteering and the excellent work students do in their community.
