Government's top doctor continues lecture series (Sir Liam Donaldson - A Safer World for Healthcare, 27 February)

The Chief Medical Officer for England and the UK’s Chief Medical Adviser, Sir Liam Donaldson, is to give a talk as part of Nottingham Trent University’s Distinguished Lecture Series. Sir Liam’s lecture – A Safer World for Healthcare – will explore the human side of patient safety and how to achieve a safer healthcare system for the future.

The ticketed event, which is open to the public and free to attend, is taking place at 6.30pm on 27 February in the University’s Sir Harry and Lady Djanogly Lecture Theatre on Shakespeare Street in the city.

Sir Liam, only the fifteenth person to hold the Chief Medical Officer post since it was established in 1855, has authored a series of ground-breaking reports aimed at transforming a range of areas of health, healthcare and medical science. He produced the country’s first comprehensive health protection strategy, proposed new legislation to allow carefully regulated stem cell research, and addressed poor clinical performance. He also introduced programmes for patient safety and empowering patient self-management of chronic disease.

His trailblazing annual reports have brought major health concerns to public attention, in particular the need for smoke-free public places, the obesity time bomb and the problems of binge drinking. He also created the concept of clinical governance – a clinically led way to assure high standards of care – which is now an internationally recognised approach in health care.

Sir Liam is revered for his leadership of patient safety as a priority for health care systems around the world. His report, An Organisation with a Memory, shaped policy on patient safety in the UK and his chairmanship of the World Health Organization World Alliance for Patient Safety has moved action to a global scale.

In addition to his extensive published writing and research on health and healthcare, Sir Liam has received honours and awards from many public bodies. He has also given many keynote addresses at conferences and is an experienced broadcaster and public communicator.
