Fashion students make the cut
Three Nottingham Trent University students have made the finals of one of the country’s most prestigious fashion design competitions. Bonnie Yau, Terri Dewhurst and Alicia Stone, all final year fashion students, have been shortlisted as finalists in the Fashion Awareness Direct (FAD) competition, which will be judged at a London catwalk show on the 22nd April.
The annual FAD competition attracts entries from university students all over the UK, each hoping for the chance to see their designs make the catwalk.
The complex and intricate design brief required entrants to create a hybrid garment that could be transformed with additional layers.
Grazia Magazine’s fashion news and features editor Melanie Ricky and Hoss Intropia founder Constan Hernandez will be part of a panel of experts tasked with selecting a winner from the group. The top designer will walk away with a prize of £2000, as well as a prestigious fashion industry work placement.
With a quarter of the finalists coming from Nottingham Trent University, hopes are high that one of them will bring back first prize and add to an already impressive list of FAD successes.
Finalist Alicia said: “I can’t believe my work’s been chosen. It’s a really exciting opportunity for the three of us and I’m really pleased that Bonnie and Terri will be coming to London as well. We’ve all worked really hard towards this.”
Gilly Staples, senior lecturer and fashion course leader from the university’s School of Art and Design, said: “We’ve done really well at the FAD Awards over recent years, and to have three of our students shortlisted for this year’s final is a fantastic achievement.”
