Students reach finals of Global Management Challenge

Students from Nottingham Trent University have reached the finals of a national competition which challenges them to create, manage and direct their own virtual business. The Hobsons Global Management Challenge UK uses sophisticated business simulation software to test the rigours of each team’s company and forces them to make key decisions across a number of areas.  The aim of the competition is to finish with the highest price on a virtual stock exchange.

Just eight teams remain out of the original 300 that entered the competition back in October 2007.  The winners of the national final on the 18 March will represent the UK in an international final being held in Bucharest in April 2008.

Having made it through the UK semi-finals against 64 other teams, Nottingham Trent University’s team, “The Economists”, are heading to London with high hopes.  Przemyslaw Trela, Rafal Lankosz and Bartosz Stys are all Polish students from the University of Economics in Katowice, Poland, who are currently enrolled on Nottingham Business School’s pioneering MSc in European Business and Finance programme - a multilingual international master joint degree that recruits students from across the EU.

Each team within the competition was provided with a virtual company and briefed on its history prior to their taking control of it.  The team was then required to manage the intricate relationships of marketing, production, distribution and human resource management, as well as dealing with finance, assets, accounting and the production of management reports.  Business simulation software produces scenarios and world events designed to test the company’s robustness within a virtual global market.

The Economists captain, Przmyslaw Trela said: “We’re very happy to have made it so far in the competition.  Winning would be an incredible achievement, but for the time being we’re just pleased to have made it to the finals!”

Dr Emil Helienek, programme leader for Nottingham Trent University’s MSc in European Business and Finance said:  “The student’s success in the competition so far is something to be really proud of.  It demonstrates the quality and usefulness of the skills that they are learning with us and highlights our international partnerships with new EU countries.”
