University hosting regional science competition
The sweetness of cola, the sourness of lemon juice and the minerals in mineral water will each be tested as school pupils compete during a day of science experiments at Nottingham Trent University. Chemistry pupils from 11 Midlands’ schools will take part in the regional final of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Schools’ Analyst Competition at the university’s Clifton Campus on 4 April 2008.
Pupils will use a variety of analytical methods to test each substance before judges decide which school should proceed to the national final in June. As well as being marked on skill, understanding and accuracy, schools will be required to promote teamwork and safety in the laboratory.
The event, being hosted by the university’s Centre for Effective Learning in Science, aims to give post-16 pupils the chance to undertake practical experiments relevant to industrial and social needs, with laboratory techniques used in higher education.
