Students' Union receives national green award
Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU) has been recognised for its hard work and commitment to environmental practice, receiving a Bronze at this year’s Sound Impact Awards ceremony in Liverpool. A total of 67 Students’ Unions entered the competition, now in its second year of running.
NTSU was checked against a list of criteria including efficiencies in printing and photocopying, recycling of glass, labelling of light switches and lobbying activities. The Students’ Union’s conservation society, Raising and Giving (RAG) society and the recently awarded Fairtrade status contributed heavily to the Sound Impact Award, along with NTSU’s city centre shop which now recycles 100% of its cardboard.
Alan Williams, project manager for NTSU’s environmental committee said: “We’re really pleased that all of our efforts have been recognised by this award and we’re proud to be doing our bit to help make a difference.”
Scott Blakeway, president of the students’ union added: “It’s important that large organisations like us lead by example. We want all of our members to notice our efforts and do their bit as well to reduce our impact on the environment.”

Notes for editors: The Sound Impact Awards were devised by Anna Heywood, a student who objected to the use of packaging in her students’ union. Their purpose is to encourage, nurture, reward and celebrate environmental best-practice in Students’ Unions.
