Engineering an interest for the future
An exciting programme of practical activities and demonstrations designed to tempt youngsters to consider a career in engineering will be taking place later this month. Organised and hosted by Nottingham Trent University, in partnership with the Nottinghamshire Electronics in schools HUB, the Engineer IT event will happen on the 24 and 25 April at the university’s Clifton campus and is expected to attract 120 pupils from 12 Nottingham schools.
With workshops and demonstrations covering a wide range of engineering topics, pupils will learn from experts about the exciting world of engineering and the career opportunities available within it. Smart textiles, pneumatic structures, musical machines and electronic products will all be on show, alongside a special demonstration of Nottingham Trent University’s very own Robotic Snake project.
Special guest John Findlay, of BBC’s Robot Wars fame will also be present for a robotic vehicle design workshop. Following his achievements and success on the hit TV show, John and other former Robot wars colleagues now run their own touring robotic battle ground, making special appearances at events up and down the country.
John said: “It's important that young people learn about the world of engineering so that the future of the industry is secure. Events like this are a great way to do that and I'm pleased to be taking part.”
Andy Cooper, senior lecturer from Nottingham Trent University’s School of Education, and organiser of the Engineer IT event added: “We're expecting this to be a great experience for the pupils. Witnessing the world of engineering with workshops and demonstrations such as these really brings it to life.”
