Danielle Beccan Memorial Trust Sports Day
Nottingham Forest and South Nottingham College are joining forces for the first ever Danielle Beccan Memorial Trust Sports Day to be held at the Clifton Campus of Nottingham Trent University.
Coaches from Nottingham Forest and the College will give 130 children from secondary schools in the city the benefit of their expertise at the Sports Day on Thursday May 22. As well as football, the youngsters will have the chance to try their hand at a number of other sports including rugby under the guidance of coaches from Nottingham Rugby Club and Nottingham Trent University.
The organisers hope the event will help break down barriers which may exist between children from different areas of Nottingham and help reduce anti-social activity in the city – the aim of the Trust, which was set-up following the murder of Danielle in 2004. Her family are hoping to build a £500,000 Performing Arts Centre in her memory.
Danielle’s grandmother, Shernette Muir, said: “We hope children from all over Nottingham will take advantage of the Arts Centre, regardless of what area of the city they are from. That’s the aim of the Sports Day. We’re looking to break down barriers and bring together youngsters from across the city."
The Trust is Nottingham Forest’s nominated charity and the club’s PR Executive, Amy Sutton, said: “We have been proud to be linked the Trust over the past 18 months. We have raised just over £50,000 – the most we have ever raised for our nominated charity.
“And we hope the Sports Day will help the Trust take another significant step towards their aim of raising £500,000.”
The event is also being backed by the trade union Unite and army regiment, the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters.
