One millionth landmark journey

A Nottingham Trent University bus service has taken its one millionth customer in just three years. The landmark journey was made by student Jennifer Hall, who used the Unilink No.4 bus to transport her to lectures at the university’s Clifton campus.

Operated by Nottingham City Transport (NCT), the No.4 Unilink service makes use of a fleet of five articulated or “bendy” buses, the only ones of their kind operating in Nottingham. Running every 15 minutes between the city and the Clifton campus during term time, the bus route services have proved to be extremely popular.

Winner of a term’s free NCT travel, Jennifer said: “I use the No.4 Unilink to get to university all the time. It’s great that it runs so regularly, and the buses are clean and safe. It’s the ideal way for me to get to lectures.”

Nottingham Trent University identified the need for a new bus service in 2005. Through joint investment with Nottingham City Council and close working with NCT, the No.4 Unilink has now transported one million passengers in three years, helping to dramatically reduce the number of car journeys made in Nottingham by students, reducing congestion and tackling climate change.

Nicola Tidy, NCT Marketing and Communications Director, said: “The No.4 Unilink bus has proved to be a very successful service. The high numbers of students that make use of it for their studies and other university activities shows just how important it is to them.”

She continued “The NTU student card which can be enabled with discounted travel on the NCT and NET networks has also played a key role in the development of this service. Over half the students travelling use their student card to travel.”

Notes for editors:

Funding for the new Unilink 4 service saw the City Council investing in new bus shelters, CCTV shelter cameras, improved bus stop paper based information and real time information that can be accessed at the bus stop on electronic displays, or alternatively on the web or by text message.
