University awards diplomas in Azerbaijan

Sixteen Azerbaijani students have received a postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management from Nottingham Trent University at a special awards ceremony in Azerbaijan. Attended by the British Ambassador, Dr Carolyn Browne, and president of BP Azerbaijan, Bill Schrader, the ceremony marked the graduation of the first cohort of students to study this international course.

Nottingham Trent University enrolled its first intake of students for the diploma in May 2006. Over the past two years, 11 workshops have been delivered by staff from the University’s Nottingham Business School, working alongside a local Azerbaijani colleague who has helped to deliver material relating to the Azerbaijan business context. The students, comprised of HR specialists from BP and BUE Caspian, now form the basis of a growing HR community in the country.

The course follows the same format as that studied by students at Nottingham Trent University here in the UK covering modules such as people management and development, managing in strategic business contexts, performance management and learning and development.

Dave Doughty, principal lecturer for HR Management at Nottingham Business School has been visiting Azerbaijan on behalf of the University since 1994 when he helped to establish a school of public administration over there.

“Our 14 year history of working in Azerbaijan has helped us to succeed in delivering postgraduate studies in personnel management,” said Dave. “The country is becoming very much more focussed on the significance of people in relation to business success and I’d like to think we may have played a very small part in that thinking!”

He added: “The success of the course is down to the relationship that has been built up over the years between Nottingham Trent University and this fascinating country.”

As well as continuing to recruit to the diploma course, the University is also investigating possible opportunities to provide coaching and mentoring programmes in the future.

Speaking to students at the graduation ceremony, British Ambassador, Dr Carolyn Browne, said: “This event is important because it marks the outcome of the first stage of collaboration between Nottingham Trent University and BP. It gives you the opportunity not only to develop your skills in Human Resources management but also to do so to an internationally recognised standard.”
