Student journalist wins national award
A documentary covering the dangers and abuse faced by paramedics whilst on duty has earned a student journalist a prestigious national award. David Reed, a final year student studying Broadcast Journalism at Nottingham Trent University, was named the Press Gazette’s Student Television Journalist of the Year, for his piece entitled ‘Ambulance: On the Front Line’.
Incredibly, five of the six finalists for the award were from Nottingham Trent University, but David certainly didn’t expect to be the winner. He said: “I can’t believe it. My degree course has been great and it’s given me the chance to take on some really interesting and exciting projects. I’m delighted that one of them has led to me winning this award.”
Announcing the winner at the awards ceremony in London, Tony Loynes, Editor in Chief of the Press Gazette, said: “It’s not very often, but sometimes this happens. The fact that so many of the finalists for the category have come from the same university shows that excellent work is being done there. The university is clearly a magnet for talent.”
David was also nominated for the Student Journalist of the Year award, whilst course-mate Yasin Mutvalli’s feature entitled ‘The Trouble Within’ - an examination of how some young Muslim men become radicalized - was nominated for scoop of the year.
Dr Emma Hemingway from the university’s School of Arts and Humanities accompanied the students to the awards ceremony. She said: “We’re so pleased for David. The centre for Broadcast Journalism really pushes for the very highest standard in its work, so it’s great to have had that recognised with this success.
“It seemed likely that we’d be bringing home another winner this year with so many nominations, but with all of the students having produced such incredible work we couldn’t predict who it would be. They’ve all got bright futures ahead of them.”
