Masters prepare for major art and design showcase - Inside Out MA Expo at Nottingham Trent University (12 and 14-19 July)
A woman who began photographing the landscapes of race circuits in a bid to deal with the potential dangers being faced by her racing-driver son is to have her work shown as part of a major postgraduate art and design exposition at Nottingham Trent University.
Fine artist Lindsay Jelley will join more than 100 Masters students presenting their innovative and groundbreaking projects at Inside Out – the School of Art and Design’s biggest and best MA Expo yet.
Work – by postgraduate students from almost 20 countries and spanning subjects including fine art, graphic design, product design, fashion, knitwear and textiles – will be on show on 12 and 14-19 July in the University’s Bonington building, a state-of-the-art centre for creativity.
Lindsay has produced a striking collection of images taken across the world, showing race circuit scenes in intricate detail. Shots include close-ups of track surfaces, bundles of new and used tyres, empty stands, and various car parts such as engines and nosecones. She turned to photography as a means of focusing her mind elsewhere as her son Stephen drove at high speeds and in often treacherous conditions in the British F3 International Series, GP2 Asia and currently for Team RAC in the British Touring Car Championships.
Lindsay, who has also produced paintings and videos as part of her project, said: “Working in such an emotional environment, and in a state of tension, has been a real challenge. But the process has helped to put my mind in another place on race days and enabled me to cope with the nerves of watching my son compete. I wanted to show the landscape of a racing circuit as one of extremes – from calm, quiet and beauty to noise, tension and competition.”
MA Fashion Design student, Yutaka Sotome, meanwhile, has produced a collection of street clothes which he has combined with his own animation and graffiti art designs. The collection, which he has dubbed a ‘Sub-cultural Hardcore Mixx’, aims to reflect military, workwear, sportswear and tailoring, with an emphasis on pattern cutting and details.
Other work includes a study of memories, people, emotions and cultures made into bespoke textile prints using designs, forms and colours; and a photography project exploring the personal, emotional and intimate spaces inhabited by British soldiers on an Army barracks in Germany.
Another student has examined issues associated with launching a new sports brand to teenagers such as naming, styling and product range; while another has designed clothing inspired by the shape and texture of modern sculpture.
Academic Team Leader for Masters Programmes in Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, Carol Jones, said: “This innovative and diverse exhibition showcases the extensive collaborative, cultural and international influences that are intrinsic to the School’s vibrant postgraduate art and design community. It is part of our aim to produce confident, articulate, reflective, contextualised and world-aware global design citizens.”
