Summer School will inspire creativity

Writing for the screen, customising clothing, and photography without a camera are just a few of the courses on offer as part of an exciting summer school developed by Nottingham Trent University. A variety of short courses are being run by the University’s School of Art and Design throughout July and August, with the aim of inspiring individual creativity in young people.

The courses – between two and four days long and held across the University’s city site – are being led by a host of top industry experts. Writer and director Steven Sheil, whose debut feature film 'Mum & Dad' is in the official line-up at this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival, will take 'Writing for the Screen'. The course, from 1 July to 3 July, will aim to give youngsters aged 14 to 18 the chance to develop an idea into an industry-standard short film.

A range of specialist tutors will take 'Introduction to Contemporary Crafts' from 16 July to 18 July, giving youngsters an insight into a variety of craft materials and processes including glass, ceramics, textiles and metal. There will be demonstrations and hands-on projects delivered in dedicated studios by experienced makers, all of whom are associated with the University’s Decorative Arts course.

'Customise Your Clothing', which will involve using various printing processes to create personalised garments, runs from 21 July to 23 July, and will be tutored by illustrator and textile designer, Kay Van-Bellen, and Alvyn Mills, a Senior Technician in Printed Textiles at Nottingham Trent University.

For those interested in fashion and textiles the 'Digital Knit' course, from 21 July to 23 July, will allow them to explore the creative potential of design through the medium of knit. Led by Nicola Francis, the Programme Leader for Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles at Nottingham Trent University, participants will use cutting-edge knitting technology and produce fabrics of their own design.

And youngsters can discover the fundamentals of how images are produced by building and using their own series of cameras as part of 'Photography without a Camera', from 21 July to 23 July. The course, being led by photographer and teacher, John Legge, will see students producing their own unique images and exploring cyanotypes, an early photographic process.

Other courses include 'Photography Movement' (2 July to 4 July) 'Adventures in Narration and Interaction' (9 July to 10 July) 'Capturing the Sonic' (21 July to 23 July) 'Digital Print' (21 July to 23 July) 'Print Processes for Textiles' (21 July to 23 July) 'Weave' (21 July to 23 July) and 'Fashion' (4 August to 8 August).

Christine White, Academic Team Leader for Narrative and Interactive Arts at Nottingham Trent University, said: “We are very pleased to be able to offer an exciting range of opportunities to young people in the region. The courses will not only introduce them to crafts and skills but also to the University’s School of Art and Design and the creative activities that it is possible to go on to study at degree level. We’re looking forward to a particularly inspiring summer working with the next generation of talented young people.”
