Energy-saving adaptor powers company to top prize
An intelligent energy-saving mains adaptor has earned a company founded by a Nottingham Trent University graduate one of the UK's most prestigious awards for business performance. OneClick Technologies, founded by Peter Robertson, has received the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2008.
Peter developed the idea for the IntelliPlug – which dramatically cuts electricity usage on consumer electronics – while studying for a Masters of Business Administration at the University's Nottingham Business School. Peripherals such as printers, scanners and speakers are plugged into the device, which determines whether a unit is on or off, and switches power to and from the peripheral equipment accordingly – meaning no more wasted energy.
"We are so proud of this award, and it is a real honour to have won with such a simple yet effective product" said Peter.
He said: "Modern lifestyles consume vast amounts of electricity for an ever-growing number of household appliances and gadgets. These products are invariably left on standby and it is costing us the earth. We believe in producing products which allow the consumer to continue their lifestyle and make a major contribution to energy-saving.
"As well as dramatically cutting energy usage, the IntelliPlug will guard against potentially damaging power surges and extend the working life of a home electronic product."
Shishir Malde, who lectured Peter before he graduated in 2002, said: "We are all delighted that Peter's work has been recognised in this way. He put forward a commercial plan for the idea as part of his New Business Venture assignment and it was obvious then that he was determined to make it work. It was a real pleasure to have him on the course and we wish him more success in the future."
