Star chef opens new food facility
Nottingham Trent University’s new in-house food technology laboratory has been opened by Michelin-star award winning chef, Sat Bains.
Sat cut the ribbon on the new lab for the School of Education at the Maudslay Building, City campus. During his hour-long visit he also made a short speech, tasted food cooked by students, took part in an informal Q&A and signed a plate from his restaurant with the mantra ‘taste, texture, temperature’, which will be displayed on the lab wall.
The food technology laboratory has been set up for the in-house training of current postgraduate trainees and to allow for the expansion of undergraduate food technology studies within the School of Education.
Part funded by the TDA, the lab will also be used to host events which will support the training of current food teachers and specialists within the region. Local pupils will also have access to the facility.
Sat Bains said: “I learnt how to cook simple things like scrambled eggs when I was young, so I believe its really important that all children develop an awareness of food, cooking and healthy eating as early as possible. It was a pleasure for me today to be involved with the opening of this new lab at Nottingham Trent University. It will ensure a flow of quality food technology practitioners into the industry to help teach children these vital skills.”
Dr Gill Scott, Dean of the School of Education, added: “With 20 per cent of food technology teachers due to retire in the next 12 months, it is imperative that Nottingham Trent University, through the School of Education, effectively trains new food technology teachers so they are ready to take up post in this important area of the curriculum.
“The new facility further develops our excellent resources for training teachers in Design and Technology and allows Nottingham Trent University to offer a full suite of subjects in modern and well equipped facilities.”
