Student radio station Flys away with five awards

Fly FM, the radio station of Nottingham Trent Students Union, has scooped an amazing five awards at the prestigious National Student Radio Awards. At a ceremony held at Indigo2 inside London’s O2 arena last week, Fly FM took away awards in five out of the six categories in which it was nominated, including two gold awards.

The awards, supported by BBC Radio 1, Global Radio and PPL, recognise the achievements of student radio stations across the country and are judged by top industry names such as Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt and veteran broadcaster Mark Goodier.

Former Fly FM presenter and station manager, Mark Crossley, who now presents on Nottingham station Trent FM, took the gold for Best Male Presenter and will now have the chance to present a one off show on BBC Radio 1 later in the year.

The Best Male award is seen by many as a springboard into the radio industry - Radio 1 presenter Greg James won the award three years ago and promptly received a job offer from the BBC station.

Fly FM also received gold in the Best Marketing & Branding category. It is run by Nottingham Trent University students and broadcasts live from the campus every day during term time on www.flyfm.co.uk.

The station received further recognition with Dan Bunker taking the silver award in the Best Newcomer category and Jessica Cooper the silver for Best Female Presenter. To complete the night, Fly FM was named among the top three student radio stations in the country, receiving a bronze award in the Best Student Radio Station category.

Fly FM station manager, David Cameron Walker, said: “This is a remarkable achievement for the station. A huge well done and congratulations go to everyone who’s involved with Fly. A lot of hard work and commitment has gone into making it an award winning station and I am absolutely delighted that our efforts have been rewarded in this way.”
