Professor secures share of first Uk/Irish research grants

Professor Martyn Bennett, Professor of Early Modern History and Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Nottingham Trent University, has secured one of only five research grants to be awarded by a newly formed funding partnership, which will see UK and Irish academics working together.

The £15,250 grant is one of the first to be given jointly by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS).

The project - Oliver Cromwell and the transformation of Britain and Ireland – will bring together a number of the foremost Oliver Cromwell experts as Professor Bennett will work in collaboration with Dr Micheal O'Siochru from the Centre for War Studies at Trinity College, Dublin and colleagues from a number of other institutions, including Professor John Morrill of Cambridge University.

Professor Bennett said “The funding partnership has been set up to broaden research across national boundaries and has therefore provided welcome opportunities for UK academics to work with Irish colleagues on projects of shared interest; in this case an important and often controversial figure from our shared histories.”
