Summer school details
Strasbourg
The Strasbourg programme was developed jointly with the School of Law, Loyola University, Chicago. The aim of this week-long event is to introduce students to human rights and EU Law. Human rights issues are explored primarily through a health law focus as the Council of Europe has been particularly active in that area.
The itinerary includes visits to the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe. Representatives from these institutions give talks to the students, complementing the lectures given by staff from Nottingham and Loyola. The accompanying social programme includes a picnic and boat trip. 6 July - 13 July, 2013.
Tallinn
The Tallinn programme focuses on International Commercial Law and is run in conjunction with Tallinn Law School, Tallinn Technical University, with Nottingham students spending a week studying alongside their Tallinn counterparts. Along with a visit to the Estonian Parliament and Cabinet Office, there is a visit to the Estonian Supreme Court in Tartu, a walking tour of the Old Town, an optional visit to Ollesummer (a major beer and music festival) and an optional day excursion to Finland. 29 June - 6 July, 2013.
Berlin
The focus for the Berlin programme is International Criminal Justice. Students will learn about war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, crimes of aggression, and victims and reparation. The programme includes a boat trip and visits to Checkpoint Charlie and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. 20 July - 27 July, 2013.
Geneva
In Geneva the focus is on International Humanitarian Law. Students will gain an awareness of the work of the UN, Red Cross and WHO. Topics of study will include: international arbitration, health and patient safety in the developing world, religious liberty.
Social and cultural activities are an important part of the visit too and the whole experience provides students with a valuable insight into international law and world affairs. 20 July - 27 July, 2013.
Nijmegen
The Summer School will run in partnership with Radboud University and the focus will be on International State Security Law. Further details will be available shortly. 6 July - 13 July, 2013.
