Academic teams

Research in the School of Social Sciences is split into five Academic divisions, which each have related research groups.

Criminology, Public Health and Policy Studies

Criminology, Public Health and Policy Studies is diverse in its composition, covering areas from criminal justice and social policy through to environmental management and corporate responsibility. Taken as a whole, the Division brings together academics from a wide range of subject areas who are collectively engaged in research which is policy orientated and designed to produce effective policy responses to a whole range of social, community and organisational problems.

Guidance, Youth Studies and Youth Justice

The team’s research interests are concerned with a range of guidance and youth/youth justice related contexts. Research within GYS is characterised by its interdisciplinary and its applied focus with staff drawn from a number of allied professions working to a common goal: to maximise the impact that professional interventions have on the lives of young people. This has been the emphasis for all research activity which seeks to shape, theory, policy and practice.

Politics and Sociology

Politics and Sociology has high quality research outputs and expertise in a number of areas within the disciplines of Politics and Sociology. Research within Politics is focussed around two key areas; European Politics and Political Theory. Research in Sociology is policy orientated and covers a range of different aspects of the discipline, including Race, Youth and Social exclusion, Religion and Identity, and Employment.

Psychology

Psychology has seen much expansion in recent years, both in terms of numbers of academic staff and in research facilities. Research in Psychology covers a wide range of areas, and the Division is fast becoming known for its distinct excellence in applied psychological research. The Division is divided into five main research groups, comprising:

Social Work, Health and Social Care and Counselling

Social Work, Health and Social Care and Counseling undertakes research within the fields of Social Work, Health and Social Care, and Counselling with staff working collaboratively with professionals for a range of stakeholders including the users of social care service, carers, Central Government bodies such as the General Social Care Council and Department of Health. The Division also has well developed links with professional bodies such as Skills for Care, Skills for Health, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the Charted Institute of Personnel and Development, which enable staff to draw on a wealth of expertise.
