School of Art & Design
Research in the School of Art and Design is dynamic and imaginative. We have an outward looking research culture, with a strong focus on art and design practice and its contribution to cultural enrichment, social dynamics and economic vitality. Research in the School is clustered around the following key groups of activity, which reflect staff expertise.
Find out more about research opportunities in each area by following the links below:

The School's website and research pages contain further information on the activities of our research groups.
Our research is supported by income from a range of bodies, including the AHRC, the Drapers Company, the EU and other national charities and public service agencies in the East Midlands and beyond. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 65% of our work was classified at an international standard and 35% as world leading or internationally excellent.
The School of Art and Design has some 30 PhD students undertaking original investigations and developing fresh ideas, designs, performances and works of art. More theoretically-based projects engage with a range of perspectives on art and design practice, drawing from cultural, perceptual, pedagogical and systems theory. In addition, a significant strand of activity is focused on the exploration of new technologies and innovations in methods, materials and procedures.
For an informal discussion about your ideas prior to making a formal application, please contact Dr Alison Goodrum in the School of Art and Design.
