Nottingham Law School has an active, highly skilled and successful research community. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 60% of work submitted by the School was rated as internationally significant. Its research is both academically rigorous and directly relevant to policy-makers and practitioners in the field. The methodologies utilised range from traditional doctrinal legal scholarship to empirical socio-legal research.

The School has successfully undertaken projects for a wide range of external bodies across the public and private sectors, including government agencies and law firms. Active researchers working in the School’s acknowledged areas of research excellence and expertise have national and international profiles.

Research students benefit from the activities of:

  •  The Centre for Legal Education
  •  The Centre for Rights, Conflict and Justice 
  •  The Centre for Business and Insolvency Law.

The Centre for Business and Insolvency Law provides a focus for areas of research strength within the Law School by supporting a vigorous community of legal researchers and through the provision of regular research seminars and conferences.

Applications are particularly invited from students who are interested in the following projects:

  • Legal Education in the World of the Legal Services Act 2007.
  • An Analysis of the Common European Asylum System and its Compatibility with the International Human Rights of Refugees.
  • The International Right of States to Self-defence, particularly as regards to terrorist groups and / or uses of Armed Force which are not Attributable Directly to other states.
  • Democracy, Deference and Dialogue: How Should we Treat Human Rights to Participate in the Democratic Process?

The scholarships will pay UK / EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2012 / 13) for up to three years.
