Art and Civil Society

Art and Civil Society the research area of the visual arts. The group’s work points towards concerns integral to art, as well as to art's relationship to the challenges that face culture and society today.

Through a range of methodologies 'in' and 'through' art practice, the research proposes sites for the embodiment of social imagination and artefacts, created within critical contexts and responding to meaningful cultural issues.

For example we bring together work that inspects:

  • Belief systems
  • Irresolution
  • The decorative

Place identities Our research actively feeds into the course provision. Through our activities there is a focus on research-led teaching that ensures that the University has 'porous borders' through strong relationships with arts institutions and organisations.

Our research is undertaken in order to generate and participate in the forming and imaginative critical reflection of civil society today and to address art's role in creating social utility and educational purpose.
