Sustainable Consumption
Sustainable consumption is a multidisciplinary research group with membership drawn from across the College.
Our members apply theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding from design and related disciplines to issues concerning environmental and social sustainability, often integrating expertise in design with research frameworks drawn from the social sciences. An emerging interest is the influence of consumers on sustainability as users of products and services ranging from buildings to clothing.
The group has internationally recognised expertise in product longevity and the materiality of social practices and this has fed into projects on sustainable product design and social innovation. Extensive clothing industry experience has informed research and consultancy on clothing longevity, fashion culture, and supply chains.
Other areas of research activity include:
- energy and water use in buildings
- recycling
- craft-based practices and sustainable theatre.
Members work closely with other Academic Schools and Future Factory.
