Textiles and Material Culture
The newly-instigated Textiles and Material Culture Group aims to promote research in textiles, dress and material culture (both theory and practice-based).
A major focus of our work is the significance and meaning of textiles across cultures and time, and our research covers a range of social contexts and historical periods.
We work with partners from education, industry and cultural institutions and research collaborations are already in place at local, national and international level. These include:
- Nottingham Castle Museum
- V&A
- British Council
- Garden Silk Mills (India)
- Maiwa Handprints (Canada).
We offer a range of expertise across the field of textiles and dress, including lace, Victorian and Edwardian design, 2D and 3D digital printing, Indian textiles, dress and crafts.
Members of our group have attracted income from major funding organisations, including the AHRC, Pasold Research Fund and the Leverhulme Trust.
