Cultural Studies

The Cultural Studies Research Group (CSRG) aims to formalise the University's long-standing commitment to teaching and research in the field, which started in the 1980s and is distinguished by:

  • a stress on both historical and spatial dimensions of cultural forms, practices and processes
  • an emphasis on theoretically informed cultural analysis
  • a focus on the processes through which cultural identities are made and re-made within complex power relations
  • an analysis of the inter-relationships between cultural institutions and industries, cultural forms and texts, and lived cultures.

For PhD students, we not only offer the opportunity to work with leading figures in the field across a wide range of specialisms but also the chance to be part of an exciting and lively research culture. This includes our annual Media and Cultural Studies Symposium (previous topics include Class, Taste, Technology and Work) and our themed seminar series featuring invited guest speakers (previous themes include Everyday Cultures, Diaspora and Migration, and Visual Cultures). Details of recent and ongoing events can be found on our Blog: Cultural Studies @ Nottingham Trent.

There is also the opportunity to work within our postgraduate community of PhD students. Current students are working on a wide range of topics, including:

  • constructions of newsworthiness
  • the holiday in British cinema
  • gender, national identity and political participation in Chile
  • the cultural history of sunglasses
  • women and music technology
  • online social networks in Mexico
  • diaspora, identity and multiculturalism in Hawaii.
